Water
Canals, Common Spaces and Architecture.
Two of the most important natural waterways
in the city of Santiago run from east to west: the Maipo river and the Mapocho
river. For hundreds of years -using these rivers and other waterways as their
starting point- a web of artificial canals of different sizes and routes have
been built to form an irrigation network. WAUM 2016 will focus its observation
and reflection on these canals to form ideas and projects.
As works of infrastructure and engineering
that had their origin in the agricultural world and sanitation, and built with
a particular logic in mind, today these canals are becoming obsolete when faced
with the complexity of variables and necessities that make up contemporary
living. These works can be reimagined through architecture, triggering new
spacial and urban situations that foster quality common spaces within the city.
On day one of the workshop, more detailed information will be provided
about the project, the specific place of intervention and the work to be
developed by the different groups of participants.
